1. Default Key Commands In Emulator Core

  • N64: Dpads PC: Arrow keys 2. N64: Analong stick PC: Arrow keys 3. N64: Start button PC: Enter 4. N64: B PC: C on keyboard 5. N64: A PC: X on keyboard.
  • With the ROM still running, go to Config Controllers. And set up your controls by clicking on the textboxes and pressing the button on your controller or keyboard you wish to have mapped to the displayed N64 control. If your controller isn't registering inputs you are missing the required drivers for your controller and must find them.

The emulator core supports key commands for many functions. The default key bindings are given below, but may be changed by editing the configuration file as described later in this document.

But I can assign the controls fine and project 64 recognize the controller. However, when starting the game, it does not recognize the controller. The keyboard works fine though, I tried it. I also tried to download another plugin and placed it in the right file, but project 64 does not see the new dll. I was using rage from 2015.

2. Default Key Mappings for SDL-Input Plugin

The keys or joystick/mouse inputs which will be mapped to the N64 controller for playing the games are determined by the input plugin. The SDL-Input plugin contains an auto-configuration function which will provide default joystick mappings for any recognized joystick. If there is no supported joystick connected, the input plugin will enable a default keyboard control mapping, as given below:

When using the keyboard, the analog stick is normally moved by its full range when you press an arrow key. Sometimes you may need to make smaller moves. In this case, you can move the analog stick more gently by holding down the Right Control key (for -50%) or Right Shift key (-25%), or both (-75%).

You may set your own key bindings for the emulator core and input plugins, by editing the Mupen64Plus config file. On Linux or OSX, this is located at ~/.config/mupen64plus/, and on Windows it is in the 'Application Data' sub-folder of your user folder. On Windows XP and prior, this is C:Documents and SettingsusernameApplication DataMupen64Plus, while on Windows Visa and newer this is C:UsersusernameAppDataMupen64Plus.

N64 Emulator Keyboard Controls These mupen64plus and Project 64 plugins use the direct controller access feature offered by my N64 to USB adapters (versions 3 and up) to let the emulated game communicate with the controllers directly.

So, what does this do for you? Many things! Here are the key advantages:
  • No calibration required. As the game talks to the controller directly, it reads exactly the same axis values it would in a non-emulated setup. In other words, the controller works, responds and feels exactly as it would in real life.
  • Low latency. When the game must read the controller, the request is forwarded directly to the controller by the adapter. The later immediately returns the controller's answer to the game.
  • Potential support for any expansion accessory without any intervention nor device-specific functionality required on the part of the emulator, of the plugin or of the adapter (except for the direct access feature), which means:
    • Rumble pack support (tested)
    • Memory pack support (tested)
    • Transfer pack support (confirmed)
    • Bio sensor support (tested)
    And just like with a real N64 system, you simply need to insert the accessory you wish to use and the game will take care of everything else. No emulator configuration required to switch accessory...
  • Support for peripherals other than controllers.
    • N64 mouse (tested)
    • VRU (confirmed, requires special ports1_4 version of the plugin)
    • N64 Keyboard (not confirmed[1])

Warning: This project is experimental and still in development. While it is already usable, some of the features above, especially the ones that are unconfirmed, may be found not to work at all.
