Board games or video games, which are better? Let the debate begin…

Game Widgets

A video game has endless possibilities. Physical board games will never be able to match that. Take a look at this 3D computer graphics application, Softimage, that was recently developed by Autodesk.

Imagine the doors that open up for video games because of technology like this. Fantasy worlds will seem convincing and realistic. Games will draw you in like never before because it will be so effortless to actually imagine yourself as the character you are controlling. All actions and motions will seem so natural that you will forget you are watching a screen. Incredible applications of physics and mathematics have made video gaming into a mind-blowing experience. Compare that to the fold out board and little plastic houses in Monopoly, and you may wonder how traditional board games stand a chance.

But board games are still in the running. They are and will always be an incredible way to bond with friends and family. Video games are very individualized. Even if you are playing a multiplayer game, each person is focused on his or her own goal. Everyone is playing at the same time, so socializing gets pushed to the back burner. When you’re playing a board game, you don’t have to work for socialization, it happens naturally. The simple act of taking turns forces people to watch and pay attention to what the other players are doing and to get involved in the game.

Video game systems like Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network have attempted to harness the power of social interaction by allowing people to communicate and connect with their friends while playing. And while this has increased the social aspect of videogames and made them more popular, it has also discouraged face-to-face interaction. It is hard to get motivated to go to a friend’s house to play a game when you could talk to them just as easily from the comfort of your bedroom. But physical interactions are important to our development as functional members of society.

Video game systems like Wii and Kinnect, however, are fairly evenly matched with board games when it comes to promoting social interaction. These systems encourage laughter, fun, and friendly competition. They are games that can be enjoyed by all ages. Plus, they have the added bonus of incorporating physical exercise, something that neither board games nor traditional video games do. And we all know that our society would benefit from a little exercise.

But in my opinion, board games will always trump video games, mostly because they offer intellectual stimulation. A person who is good a board game is good at making connections, solving problems, and thinking logically. A person who is good at video games has good coordination and reaction time. To me, the skills that board games develop are more helpful in the real world.

Another major advantage to board games is that they are made for all ages. Video games are becoming so complicated that older generations and people who are not familiar with the systems have no hope of being able to play. There is a huge learning curve and the games are not very intuitive. I could not sit down right now and have fun playing Call of Duty because it would take be weeks to even be comfortable with all the controls. Board games are fun for all ages. A 12 year old, a 3 year old, a 40 year old, and a 75 year old could all sit down and play Monopoly, Scrabble, Sorry!, or any other board game. Imagine that happening with a game like Guitar Hero or Halo.

Video games and board games both have their perks. It is hard to pick one that is better than the other because they are very different things. Personally, I am die hard board game fan, but I’m sure there are some of you out there that will scoff at the suggestion that Battleship measures up to Battlefield 3. To each his own, I suppose. All in all, I can’t imagine this world without either of them, and I sure hope that we never have to choose. But we couldn’t do anything about it anyway, so all we can do is play. Enjoy the game and let laughter brighten your life J
